6 confessions from ANC leaders that corruption is killing South Africa

Over the years, corruption has festered in the South African government. This problem has become so bad that not even the ANC’s leaders can deny its existence and impact. Billions that could have been used to help our communities have been spent on supporting the lifestyles of South Africa’s politically connected elite. Here are six times that the leaders in the ANC confessed that corruption has become a huge problem in South Africa

  1. President Cyril Ramaphosa

“What concerns me and all South Africans, are those instances where funds are stolen and misused, where there is corruption and mismanagement of public funds. Increasingly, we are hearing allegations of fraudulent UIF claims, overpricing of goods and services, collusion between officials and service providers and the creation of fake NPOs to access relief funding.”

  1. Gwede Mantashe,Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy

“The biggest concern is how did we drift into the corruption crisis as a movement and as a country. That question must be asked, we must be confronted with it and forced to answer and be honest with answering those questions.

“Today leaders of the ANC are corrupt in reality and by association, and that is the ugly side of widespread corruption: [everyone] is seen as corrupt.”

  1. Thabo Mbeki, Former South African President 1999 - 2008

"Some of the people who are competing to win nomination as our candidate local government councillors are obviously seeking support on the basis that, once they are elected to positions of power they will have access to material resources and the possibility to dispense patronage.”

  • October, 2005

  1. Matthews Phosa, Former ANC Treasurer-General

“But there is a lot of corruption. It has become systemic in municipal government, in provincial government, in national government it has become systemic. And what do we do? Instead of hitting corruption at the heart, we protect one another.”

  • June, 2016

  1. Zizi Kodwa, Deputy Minister of State Security

“It's a dark wall, it's a shame, it's a disgrace, it's a complete abomination when humanity, people are doing everything to save their lives, we are busy discussing corruption which is alleged against some of us.”

  • 10 August 2021

  1. Fikile Mbalula, Minister of Transport

“The ANC can't be associated with people who are selfish, corrupt and embrace corruption, and people who don't respect the rule of law.”

  • 30 September 2020.

South Africa needs leadership that can respond to its corruption crises. Even though the ANC’s leadership has acknowledged that corruption is undermining South Africa, the party has failed to implement strong strategies to protect the public’s money. What this means is that South Africa needs new, fresh leadership that can address this problem properly. That’s something to ponder on when you cast your ballot on the election day next month.
